Fundamental and applied virology to understand, prevent and control an emerging zoonotic arbovirus: the Rift Valley fever virus

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a zoonotic haemorrhagic fever virus belonging to the genus Phlebovirus and the family Phenuiviridae. The outbreaks of RVFV are mainly located in sub-Saharan Africa, although they have spread to Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula with thousands of human deaths and major economic losses in the countries concerned. Three very complementary research projects are developed in the team:

  • Characterization of viral factors and molecular mechanisms modulating the pathogenesis and vectorization of phleboviruses including RVFV (Dr. Frédérick Arnaud)
  • Development of antivirals and innovative diagnostic tools to fight against RVFV but also in collaboration with other Lyon teams of other haemorrhagic fever viruses such as the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) (Dr. Saw-See Hong)
  • Analysis and understanding of the key parameters of the process of emergence, propagation and persistence of RVFV and more particularly the influence of the genetic diversity of the various circulating virus strains during epidemics in West Africa (Dr Maxime Ratinier)
